Is DJI FPV a Good Drone for an FPV Beginner?

When I started flying FPV back in 2021 (yeah, sorry, I'm not part of the "early elite") - my first FPV drone was the DJI FPV. I had little experience, but ever since, I had a dozen of drones, from this to cinewhoops and more tiny whoops.
Yes, I was and still am the kind of person that picked smaller drones and the ones safer to fly.

I think this article was originally written back in 2022 or 2023; ever since, it was updated once or twice, but now I decided to near-fully rewrite (on the 28th of July 2026). Why? Because the answer is not relevant anymore.

So, shortly, my answer is: NO, DEFINITELY NOT. The DJI FPV is very outdated FPV drone, as well as by far not a safe option compared to the today's tech. My today's recommendation for a new beginner is to go with a tiny whoop such as Mobula 8, Air65, Air75, etc - those are small to fly, safe to crash a thousand times and does not create destruction when crashed. Moreover, prices are drastically lower.

And not to mention, even if I would have recommended a 5 inch quad to a beginner, which I definitely don't (not nowadays, not anymore), I wouldn't DJI FPV. one single crash = goodbye expensive drone.

But is still relevant? What if you have it already?

The answer is the same. if you have the DJI FPV as your first drone, then what I recommend is go with one more cheap analog investment into a tiny whoop, learn to fly and crash a dozen times and more before even thinking taking out the DJI FPV outside to fly it.

There are 2 advantages that may still make this drone relevant.

1. The DJI FPV have normal mode, therefore, it doesn't have to be flown in acro mode. it's a terrible experience as compared to so many other options, but is a safer one than full acro mode.
2. The DJI FPV have a strong transmission, can be flown long range, is digital and have a "return-to-home" feature. For sure not recommending to get it as a beginner for these, but it applies only if you have it.

But what if you want to get the DJI FPV drone for normal flights?

There are other cheaper and better drones to be used for regular flights because the DJI FPV may have some limitations, such as the gimbal angle that cannot go down to 90 degrees to observe a whole load of downside under you, the gimbal doesn’t have the horizontal stabilization that may cause some instability when flying in windy conditions and is bad at photography.
In this case, the drone doesn’t become unstable, but the footage results become jumpy because it will rely only on digital footage stabilization.

You already have the DJI FPV Drone and are a beginner. Now, what can you do?

• I recommend you keep practicing simulators as much as possible, such as Liftoff FPV Simulator(computer base) that is a good and accurate to the usage of an FPV drone, including the possibility to fly the DJI FPV Drone itself virtually.
• Another mention is of flying the drone in normal mode and if you try manual mode, ensure you do that safely and your acro skill level is more than decent if you want to fly it as such.
• And the third tip I can give you as a beginner flying the DJI FPV in manual mode is to have the emergency stop at your fingertip – and the first time you feel you lost control, press the button to save your drone. That’s it.
  And yes, use the return to home function to autoland your drone, as it would be tricky to do that as a beginner, and you may want to avoid a crash while landing.

A humble conclusion.

There are many situations even as a beginner buying the DJI FPV drone can be justified, but we have to keep in mind that most people will choose an FPV drone to freestyle acro and race, and simply, the DJI FPV is not meant to be used like that.
